Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy

Eczema Treatment in Cambridge

In Cambridge and across the Waikato, people dealing with eczema often reach a point where creams stop being enough. The flares settle, then come back. Antihistamines take the edge off, but nothing actually changes. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy works on the inflammation driving eczema, not the skin on top of it.

Why Us

Why Choose Us For Eczema

Works on the Inflammation, Not the Skin

Targets the systemic inflammation driving your flares instead of sitting on top like another cream.

Reaches What Creams Can't

Oxygen travels through your blood plasma to inflamed tissue throughout the body that creams and antihistamines never reach.

Run As A Course

Sessions are run as a block rather than one-offs, and they work on tissue below the skin rather than on the surface where creams act.

Alongside Your Dermatology Care

Compatible with your existing treatment, no recovery time afterwards, and no drive to Auckland to get it.

Why Topical Treatments Keep Eczema Managed But Not Resolved

Topical treatments address surface symptoms, but eczema stems from internal inflammation. The immune system produces a signal that topical creams and antihistamines intercept only at the skin level.

When treatments stop, the flares return, particularly during winter when dry air compromises the skin barrier, or spring when pollen increases symptoms. The core issue isn’t a skin problem that needs better products. It’s systemic inflammation.

How HBOT Reaches The Inflammation Behind Chronic Eczema

Under normal conditions, oxygen travels through the body attached to red blood cells. In a pressurised chamber, oxygen dissolves directly into blood plasma, reaching inflamed tissue throughout the entire body, areas topical treatments cannot access.

For eczema, this matters significantly because the inflammation exists in underlying tissue, not just the skin. When pressurised oxygen reaches these areas consistently, the immune system receives signals to stop the chronic inflammatory response.

Does Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Help Eczema?

The honest answer is that the evidence base for HBOT and eczema is thin, and we won’t pretend otherwise. What we can describe is the mechanism: inside a pressurised chamber, oxygen dissolves into your blood plasma and reaches inflamed tissue beyond the skin’s surface, past where topical treatments act. Whether that helps your eczema specifically is a conversation to have with us and with your GP or dermatologist before you start.

What Eczema Sessions At Waikato Hyperbarics Look Like

Sessions last 1 hour 40 minutes. You change into comfortable clothing and enter a clear acrylic chamber. The technician provides guidance before your first session.

Pressure builds gradually over 10 to 15 minutes, similar to airplane pressure changes. Most people find it comfortable from the second session onward. During sessions you rest, read, or listen to audio. There’s no recovery time afterward. We follow the same protocols as Auckland Hyperbarics, home to New Zealand’s largest hyperbaric chamber.

Setting Expectations

We won’t give you a timeline, because we can’t honestly predict one. How people respond varies widely, and how long you’ve had eczema is part of that picture. What we will do is set expectations around your own history at the first consult rather than quote you a standard number.

HBOT is not a replacement for the dermatology care you’re already getting. If you’re weighing it up, get in touch and we’ll give you a straight assessment, including if we don’t think it’s a fit. Patients travel from Matamata and Morrinsville to Cambridge for their session blocks.

Eczema FAQ

Questions, Answered

How many sessions will I need for eczema?

A typical block is 20 to 30 sessions, though how severe and how long-standing your eczema is will shape that. Responses vary a lot between people, so we won't put a number on what you should expect to see or when. We'll talk it through honestly when you get in touch.

Can I keep using my creams and medications during HBOT?

Yes. Continue using what's working while sessions progress. As inflammation settles, some people reduce medications over time. Consult your GP before making any prescription changes.

What if I've had eczema for decades? Is it too late for HBOT to help?

Duration alone isn't a barrier to trying it. A system that has been inflamed longer generally needs a longer course, and we'll be realistic with you about that for your situation.

What should I bring to my first appointment?

A symptom diary if you've kept one, and a list of current medications.
